Scenerio 1- There are runners on first R1 and second R2, the batter hits the ball sharply to the short stop who has the ball hit him in the palm of the glove and fall to the ground (unintentional drop). The SS picks up the ball and tags R2 (who has dove back to 2nd), steps on 2nd and then throws to first beating the batter. Is it a double play or triple play? The answer is a triple play. When the ball hit the ground in fair territory, R2 is no longer safe on 2nd base therefore when the short stop tagged him (even if R2 is standing on the base) he is out. Stepping on second puts out R1 and the throw to first puts out the batter; triple play.
